Surviving the Mock Disaster – Building an Effective Tabletop Exercise

Thursday, December 12

12:45 pm – 1:45 pm

2:00 pm – 3:00 pm (repeat)

Keep it Safe

Ken Shaurette
Director InfoSec and Audit, FIPCO

At least annually the Business Continuity Plan must be tested. This session clarifies the different types and purposes of tests. Tabletop exercise objectives include providing an opportunity for management and staff to review the purpose and contents of the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan. Proper testing should promote key staff’s familiarity with Business Continuity Planning and incident response plans. While alone the tabletop type of exercise is not enough, it addresses areas that might not otherwise be addressable with limited scope technical or alternate site testing. This facilitated session will provide an opportunity for discussion and sharing of thoughts, plans and past activities from attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand what makes up an effective test of BPC/DR using a tabletop exercise with cross-functional areas.
  2. Understand the different types of testing.
  3. Understand the importance of a script based timeline.
