ASSESSMENT IN A CULTURE OF LEARNING
1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Concurrent Session
Dynamic classroom assessment is the essence at the center of learning. When embedded in a classroom learning culture, assessment attains its loftiest uses. Our learning journey together explores current practices, while searching for assessment balance. The goal is to instigate a revolutionary shift away from accountability, the traditional assessment purpose of assessment, and diverge toward higher purposes; informing instructional effectiveness, and fostering student ownership of learning, leading to independent, invested learners.
BUILDING A CULTURE OF LEARNING
Learning Objective 1: Discovering where the energy of assessment is targeted. Is it on accountability, informing the success of instruction, or actively engaging students to become owners/operators of their own learning?
Learning Objective 2: Creating the mindset to shift the assessment culture to an embedded practice, focusing on the success of instruction and what needs to change as a result. (“teachers becoming students of their own teaching” – Hattie)
Learning Objective 3: Building collaborative relationships with students to support them as the owners of their learning. (“students becoming teachers of own their learning” – Hattie)
